I am a lawyer, diversity consultant, chef and activist in the areas of law and spirituality. Born in San Fernando, Trinidad, and immigrated to Orlando Florida with my family when I was 15 years old. I now live in Boston with my lovely 12 year old daughter and I man named after an herb. A random sampling of the people of Trinidad would yield a handsome ad for the United Colors of Benetton. We are made up of significant populations with Chinese, African, Middle Eastern, West and East Indian, and European ancestry. I can personally claim ancestry in at least four continents. I am interested in issues relating to immigration and cross-cultural integration. Through cooking and writing I hope to examine how we preserve meaning in personal histories in times of increasing globalization and sweeping economic changes. With this blog I recreate the culturally ambiguous dishes my deceased grandmother would have made. This woman, who everyone called "Mother" singlehandedly fed her 17 children and later many of their grandchildren in a small home in Couva in Trinidad for well over 60 years. She died on September 11th, 2006. With this blog, I not only hope to memorialize Mother, but I also wish to shed light on how cultures can combine for richer experiences while maintaining the integrity of their own values and beliefs.
